1st day of Rova, 4708
Note: The month of Rova is
equivalent to our month of September.
|
The Heroes arrive in the city
of Olfden in Darkmoon Vale in time for the Firetail
Festival. At the height of the festival—just
after sundown—a
large force of goblins make an assault on the city. After
several hours of chaos, the goblins are slain, captured, or
driven off. At least a dozen townsfolk are killed during the
attack.
During the attacks, the
Heroes rescue Aldern Foxglove (male human) from a
group of goblin raiders. Aldern, a wealthy landowner with an
estate some 60 miles south of Olfden, thanks the Heroes and
asks them to meet him the following evening at the Rusty
Dragon—a
local inn and tavern popular with adventurers—so
"he can reward them properly".
The Heroes also meet Sheriff
Belran (male halfling fighter), Father Zanthus
(male human, cleric of Desna), and Mayor Deverin
(female human), who each thank them for their efforts.
When they settle in at the
Rusty Dragon, the Heroes meet Amiera Kaitarn (female
human bard), a former adventurer and now owner of the inn.
She offers them a substantial discount on their rooms.
|
|
2nd day of Rova, 4708 |
The Heroes spend a leisurely
day in Olfden. It's soon apparent that the people of Olfden
see the Heroes as, well, HEROES. People begin thanking them
wherever they go, children follow them in adoration, and the
women-folk begin to gossip and fawn over the males of the
group.
One rather brazen young lady—Shaelyss
Vinder (female human)—manages
to lure Derkahz to her father's basement where she attempts
to seduce him. Even though Derkahz rebuffs her, Shaelyss's
father Ven Vinder (male human) storms in on them and
suspects the worse. Derkkahz escapes unharmed, though Vinder—a
very influential shopkeeper—threatens
to blacklist him from equipment shops all over town.
That night, the Heroes have
dinner with Aldern Foxglove at the Rusty Dragon. He gifts
them some gold and asks them to join him on a hunt the
following morning.
|
|
3rd day of Rova, 4708 |
Several of the Heroes join
Foxglove on his hunt, which takes up most of the day. They
return with a good-sized boar and have Amiera's staff roast
it for their supper. Foxglove departs and vows to keep them
in mind if any "adventuring" work comes his way.
|
|
10th day of Rova, 4708
|
The Heroes are summoned by
Sheriff Belran, who introduces them to the ranger/bounty
hunter Shalaylu (female elven ranger). Shalaylu, an
unofficial member of the Oldfen militia, has come to warn the
people of Olfden that at least six of the local goblin tribes
may be cooperating on an unprecedented scale. In addition to
the attack on Olfden during the Firetail Festival, several
farms 2-3 days to the south have been attacked by bands of
goblins from at least three tribes. Shalaylu believes some
intelligent group or being is responsible for organizing the
goblins, who usually fight among themselves.
Sheriff Belran then deputized
the Heroes and offered them a monthly stipend of 25 gp if they
continue to aid the town. The Heroes agree, and Belran asks
them to watch over the community for the next few days as he
rides south to Oregent to petition the merchant-lords there
for additional troops.
It is also revealed that
during that during the goblin attack, the bones of Father
Tobyn were dug up from the Olfden Cemetery.
Sheriff Belran also mentions a
terrible tragedy involving Simon Kelvarius (male
human wizard) and his wife Brenia (female human cleric
of Nethys), a pair of sages newly relocated to Olfden to study
the phenomenon known as the Blot. Since the Blot was involved,
Horace and 'This Humble One' were very interested. Belran
explained that Simon suddenly went mad and possibly killed his
wife. The condition of her corpse was horrific: her skin had
been complete removed and was missing.
The Heroes then split up, with
Noni and Maggie investigating the cemetery, Horace and Teslon
visiting Simon Kelvarius at the local sanitarium, and 'This
Humble One' and Derkahz visiting the Kelvarius's townhouse.
Eventually, the Heroes
reunited at the townhouse where they encountered two man-sized
undead abominations called 'Skin Horrors', as well as a brood
of four tiny skin horror cats. The fight occurred in the
cramped attic during a fierce thunderstorm. Though harrowing,
the Heroes won the die and sent the undead creatures to their
final rests.

|
11th day of Rova, 4708
|
The next day, the Heroes were
awakened in their rooms at the Rusty Dragon by Amiera
Kaitarn's cook, Magda (female halfling) who was
concerned for Amiera since she had not returned home since
early last evening. Magda showed the Heroes a note to Amiera
from her brother Tesio Kaitarn (male half-elf) that
implied he wanted to meet with her at their father's
glassworks building at midnight.
Investigating the matter, the
Heroes entered the glassworks building and encountered a band
of 14 goblins. The goblins had tortured, mutilated, and killed
10 of the glassworks workers. The Heroes, determined to avenge
them, drew hot steel and fell upon the humanoids. The battle
lasted barely a minute, and left 11 of the goblins dead and 3
fleeing for their lives.
Searching through the
Glassworks, the Heroes found the entire staff murdered—16
artisans and other workers, including old Lendor Kaitarn
himself, were discovered is the adjoining chambers and
hallways. With vengeance on their mind (and still hoping to
find Amiera Kaitarn alive), the Heroes eventually
tracked the fleeing goblins down in the deep cellars and caves
below the Glassworks.
There, in a large cave
dominated by a magnificent subterranean waterfall, the Heroes
faced Tesio Kaitarn (Amiera's wayward brother), and his
surviving goblin lackeys. After a quick but hard-fought melee,
Tesio and his goblin allies fell to the Heroes' blades and
spells. A quick search of Tesio uncovered his journal, that
spoke of his part in the goblin attack on Olfden, revealed
plans for a future attack on the city, and mentioned some of
Tesio's sinister allies: Vuala (the half-celestial
"daughter" of the late Father Tobyn), a quasit that
apparently dwelt in chambers deeper under the city, and a
mysterious being called "Malfeshnekor".
Thankfully, Amiera was also
found nearby. She was bound and drugged, but otherwise
unharmed. Gathering her up, the Heroes made their way for the
surface to rest and regroup.
|
|
13th day of Rova, 4708
|
After resting and healing their
wounds for a day, the Heroes decided to return to the
catacombs below the Glassworks to explore the chambers there
and hunt down Tesio's quasit ally.
Beyond the great waterfall
cavern, the Heroes found an abandoned tunnel system, probably
used by smugglers and thieves several hundred years ago when
Olfden was young.
Following this tunnel, the
Heroes eventually wandered into an ancient dungeon complex.
Upon entering the site, the Heroes were immediately attacked
by a pair of hideously deformed humanoids, with gaping mouths
full of shark-like teeth and long-taloned claws. The creatures
fought with blind fury and a fearsome tenacity. In fact, their
bite induced feelings of overwhelming rage in their victims,
which affected Noni for a short while after one of the horrors
clamped it's disgusting teeth around her forearm. Thankfully,
the Heroes worked together to finally put the creatures to
rest.
Exploring further, the
chambers soon revealed an abandoned shrine and cathedral to
the demon-goddess Lamashtu the Mother of Monsters. Who or what
originally constructed the dungeon could not be known, though
the shrine looked to be at least several hundred years old,
and possibly older than the smugglers' tunnels.
In the Cathedral of Lamashtu
the Heroes finally encountered the quasit and two more of her
(yes, the quasit was a "she") deformed humanoid
allies. The fight was long and brutal. Though the two humanoid
fell in battle, the quasit (with its amazing ability to heal,
quickness, and ability to fly) evaded and harassed the Heroes
for several minutes before making its escape deeper into the
complex.
Exasperated, the Heroes fled
the catacombs and made their way back to the surface to the
Rusty Dragon to heal
and make preparations for another foray into the temple of
Lamashtu.
|
|
16th day of Rova, 4708
|
After some rest and careful
planning, the Heroes returned to the catacombs below Olfden.
Shortly after entering the temple dungeons, the Heroes
encountered their quasit nemesis again. This time, however,
the fight was very brief. The tiny fiend made the mistake of
materializing in the midst of the group, hoping to catch them
all with her fear ability. Instead, only one of the Heroes
(This Humble One) fled in terror. The others immediately fell
upon the quasit with steel and spell, and rendered the tiny
fiend to a heap of quivering ichor.
After dispatching the quasit,
the Heroes discovered a secret storage niche containing a
large trunk filled with treasure and magic items.
The Heroes spent the next few
hours exploring the temple, and found a series of abandoned
chambers—gathering
halls, a library, an arcane study, a torture chamber,
and stairways leading both up and down, but hopelessly choked
with rubble.
Satisfied, the Heroes departed
the dungeon and made their way back to the Rusty Dragon.

19th day of Rova, 4708
|
After a few days of downtime, the
Heroes discovered Olfden had fallen under martial law. With
Sheriff Belran still away from the city, soldiers from the
Diamond Regiment stationed at nearby Citadel Almas had arrived
in town. Acting on behalf of the Peoples' Council of Andoran,
the city was placed under martial law in response to the
recent goblin attack and the "inability of Mayor Deverin
and Sheriff Belran to provide adequate protection for the
citizens of Olfden".
When investigating the matter
in person, the Heroes were unceremoniously stripped of their
deputy badges, and told their services were no longer
required. After speaking with Mayor Deverin, she implored the
Heroes not to abandon her citizens and asked for them to work
at least indirectly in the city's best interest. Mayor
Deverin also handed Magdalana an official writ naming her the
lawful custodian of Ravenswatch Manor.
After some private discussion,
the Heroes decided to continue their mission to eradicate the
goblins (and whoever was leading them). Following clues taken
from Tesio Kaitarn's journal, the Heroes decided their next
step was to explore the ruins located in the landmark known as
the Sneering Dwarf. The Sneering Dwarf was the head of an
immense statue said to contain several levels of chambers and
catacombs. Tesio's journal hinted that it was also home to
many goblins, as well as his mysterious lover Vuala and her
henchmen.

|
20th day of Rova, 4708
|
The Heroes set out from Olfden at
dawn, and after a log day's ride, reached Ravenswatch Manor
just after nightfall. Entering the manor house, the Heroes were
shocked to find it under the care of a mysterious gentleman
named Bremen. Bremen recognized Magdalana as "Lady
Darkheart", and claimed he was the butler and head of the
manor's servant staff. Though he dodged questions and seemed
oblivious to the remarks and bewilderment of the Heroes, he
provided them with a sumptuous feast and even readied
bedchambers for them.
|
|
21st-24th of Rova, 4708
|
The Heroes continued their
investigation of Ravenswatch Manor. After a thorough
exploration, the Heroes uncovered six items of immediate
interest:
- The South Towers are
haunted by the deranged spirit of Magdalana's grandfather,
Darex Darkheart. An incorporeal entity armed with a wand
of lightning bolts, Darex became enraged when the Heroes disturbed
him in his private chambers. The Heroes
attempted two separate engagements with the spirit, both
ending in a full retreat.
- The spirit of Magdalana's
grandmother, Violet Darkheart, also haunts the manor.
Found wandering the halls after midnight, Violet
eventually (after using fear to drive the cleric Teslon away) spoke a few cryptic words to Horace. She revealed
that she will "only find peace when her beloved's
spirit is finally put to rest".
- A great stone door warded
with the rune for "magical danger" was
discovered leading off from the wine cellar. Horace
attempted to touch the door, and was promptly rewarded
with a painful jolt of electricity. Bremen referred to the
door as the "Unopenable Door", and that it
guards "secrets dear to the former members of House
Ravenar and House Darkheart". What truly lies beyond
the door is unknown, for the Heroes do not currently have
a means of opening it.
- Horace encountered a
horrible Black Entity in the manor library that took the form of an inky
purple-black cloud of malevolence. It briefly made
physical contact with Horace, and drained him of a great
deal of his constitution. Horace fled and the creature did
not follow.
- Derkahz discovered a stone
block sealing the entrance to underground chambers on the
bottom floor of the Gatehouse. When asked about it, Bremen
claimed that the block was meant to seal a crypt belonging
to one of Magdalana's "more depraved" ancestors.
- Noni discovered that
someone had recently (in the last month) camped for
several nights in the Gatehouse and the wine cellar below
the manor (the same room containing the Unopenable Door).
- The Heroes also encountered
and defeated a terrible plant-creature dwelling in the
overgrown confines of the Greenhouse.
|
|
27th of Rova, 4708
|
The Heroes decided their next
move was to explore the crypt under the Gatehouse. After a
little more research, they determined it belonged to Zeren
Darkheart, son of Darex Darkheart. Zeren was a powerful
necromancer. He was also very arrogant and ambitious, which
eventually put him at odds with his sorcerous family. One
night, Zeren attacked his father and a terrible spell-battle
ensued and Darex was forced to kill his evil son. Adhering to
his son's wishes, Darex then constructed an elaborate crypt
for him.
The Heroes founds that a drop
of Magdalana's blood was all that was needed to make the stone
block sealing the crypt magically levitate, which exposed a
100-foot deep shaft leading into utter darkness. This was the
entrance to the crypt. Unfortunately, when the Heroes
descended into the shaft, the block lowered itself and trapped
them inside. however, written along the inside of the shaft
was a series of cryptic verses which turned out to be
mocking clues on how to escape the tomb.
Inside the crypt, the Heroes
faced insidious traps, both magical and mundane, and a variety
of terrible monsters, including a babau demon, a skeletal
warrior, a horde of zombies, a pair of wights, and a grey
ooze. They also fell prey to a terrible rolling ball trap,
that collapsed the crypt floor and sent several of the party
members into a pit of spikes. By the blessings of Sarenrae,
none of the Heroes were slain.
Wounded, the Heroes decided to
regroup and rest in one of the crypt's dismal chambers.
|
|
28th of Rova, 4708
|
After resting and tending their
wounds, the Heroes continued their exploration of Zeren's
Tomb. They discovered a small chapel protected by monster
summoning traps, which called into being several dangerous opponents-a
gargoyle, an ogre, and a minotaur. After defeating these
creatures, the Heroes discovered a secret door leading to
Zeren's hidden crypt.
There, the Heroes battle Zeren—an
undead sorcerer—and
his fiery elemental construct minions. The battle was fierce,
but the Heroes prevailed. After looting Zeren's treasures, the
Heroes made their way back to the entry shaft. There they
found the huge stone block that had previously sealed them in
the tomb, had crumbled away. They immediately climbed from the
tomb and gained their freedom.

|
30th of Rova, 4708
|
After
resting a few more days, the Heroes decided it was time to
focus once again on the goblins of the Sneering Dwarf. Knowing
that the Sneering Dwarf lay to the north and west of
Ravenswatch Manor, the Heroes decided to make their way to Falcon's
Hollow. A community known to be under the thumb of the
despicable Lumber Consortium, the Heroes found Falcon's
Hollow a most unpleasant place.
Only
minutes after entering town, the Heroes were harassed by a
gang of human and half-orc thugs—all members of Kajan
Bloodeye's gang of brigands, pimps, and murderers. When
the Heroes witnessed a gang member abusing one of their human
servants (a very young girl), a battle ensued.
Though
the gang was vanquished, and Kajan Bloodeye himself was sent
howling into the Afterlife, Noni
Goodtree lost her life. Shocked, disorganized, and facing
a reserve force of dozens of armed thugs, the Heroes fled
Falcon's Hollow and made their way back to Ravenswatch Manor
to lick their wounds.

Lamashan
to late-Neth,
4708
Note: The month of Lamashan is
equivalent to our month of September. Neth is equivalent to
November.
|
During this six week period, the
following important events occur:
- The Heroes hear that a band
of mercenaries hired by Sheriff Belran and backed by
Lumber Consortium gold, attacked and destroyed the goblins
of the Sneering Dwarf. The mysterious leaders of the
goblins, however, fled to unknown parts.
- Rudgyr Goodtree—a
human ranger adopted by the Goodtree family—arrived
at Ravenswatch Manor and was devastated to hear of his
"cousin's" death. Noni was cremated and her
remains interred in the crypts below the Gatehouse.
- Rudgyr left for Taldor—where
most of the Goodtrees were currently wintering—to
inform the family of Noni's passing. Teslon and Derkahz
decided to accompany him. The journey to the Taldoran capital
city of Oppara and back would take them roughly six
weeks.
- Horace and This Humble One
kept mainly to the library of the manor.
- Magdalana busily went about
improving her manor. She hired dozens of servants and
craftsmen to repair damage and upgrade various parts of
the manor and grounds. In time, about half of the stone
wall encircling the manor was repaired, the upper floor of
the stables was restored, and many of improvements were
made. It should be noted, that none of the hirelings dared
to enter the manor house at night. The rumors of the
ghosts and other terrors dwelling there were well known to
most folk of Darkmoon Vale.
- Magdalana also hired a band
of 10 men-at-arms to provide security for the manor.
|
|
20th
of Neth, 4708
|
Rudgyr, Orlon, and Derkahz return
from Taldor. Rudgyr officially joins the party.
|
|
28th of Neth, 4708
|
Horace
and This Humble One discover information in the manor library
pinpointing the location of a wizard's tower once owned by Vraeden
Ravenar. Vraedan lived there some 700 years ago, shortly
after his break with the Ravenars of Ravenswatch Manor (see
the Ravenswatch
Research PDF for details). What excited Horace were
several lines in an old journal claiming that Vraedan had
hidden a staff of power somewhere in the dungeon below
the tower.
The
tower was located on Stormhaven Island, a rocky island
off the coast of Andoran. After presenting this information to
his companions, the Heroes decided it was worth investigating.
|
|
9th of Kuthona, 4708
Note: The month of Kuthona is
equivalent to our month of December.
|
After journeying south to the
Andoren capital of Almas, the Heroes took ship to
Stormhaven Island. Aboard the Silver Princess—a
sturdy and swift coastal runner owned by Captain Skarvos
and his crew of six—the
Heroes reached the island after three stormy days at sea.
They reached the village of
Ashenport—the
only community on the island—in
the midst of a terrible storm. There they acquired rooms at
the local inn, a charming place called the Smooth Sailing
Inn and Tavern. Inside, the Heroes found a welcome respite
from the raging storm outside, they drank and ate well, and
spoke to several of the inn's patrons—mostly
a few merchants that had come to Ashenport for a trade fair.
|
|
10th of Kuthona, 4708
|
Early the next morning, two hours
before dawn, the Heroes woke to the sound of an eerie
siren-like call emanating from the sea. Half of the party—This
Humble One, Derkahz, and Horace—succumbed
to some sort of enchantment and immediately tried to leave the
inn and walk into the raging ocean. Luckily, their companions
stopped them.
Further investigation revealed
that several other patrons, including Captain Skarvos and most
of his crew, had also been affected by the Call. Sadly for
them, all of these folk had walked into the sea and were
forever lost.
Since none of the inn's staff
or townsfolk could be found, the Heroes immediately deduced
the entire village was in on the conspiracy. Further
investigation revealed the town was under the control of an
evil cult that worshipped some dark and dreadful power from
the sea. Their investigations led the Heroes to the local
church, where they soon discovered a secret stairway leading
down into catacombs used by the cultists.
[This is where we left off.]
